SECOND Division Kidderm-inster Rooks pulled off the chess shock of the season by eliminating Worcester and District League Cup holders Malvern.
Given the vast difference in gradings between Rooks and their Division One opponents, Malvern were expected to win 4-0, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Kidderminster progressed to the next stage because of the handicap system.
With his side leading 2-1, Malvern's Ian Clarke knew he had to win to stay in the competition, but Kidderminster's Paul Thomas held his nerve and won a piece to secure victory.
Full results (Kidderminster first): John Varilone 0, B Turner 1; Thomas 1, Clarke 0; Bill Pugh 0, G Herbert 1; Terry Pountney 1, D Spencer 0.
