WORCESTER Rugby Club have poured cold water on stories that All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu is set to sign a Sixways contract.

Chief executive Geoff Cooke says the Sixways club are always interested in talented players but stressed there have been no formal talks with the Kiwi or his agent.

Lomu is one of the biggest names in rugby union and proved to be England's World Cup nemesis when they met at Twickenham three weeks ago, scoring a stunning solo try from inside his own half.

His contract with the New Zealand Rugby Football Union expires at the end of the World Cup and the giant winger expressed an interest in playing rugby in England when he visited Sixways in September.

But the only contract talks his agent has held with Worcester was an informal chat on the Sixways pitch during that stay when his agent was inquiring which English clubs would be interested.

It is rumoured Lomu is seeking a four-year deal worth £1m and Leeds have already moved for the player in an arrangement which would see him play both rugby union and rugby league.

"Like a lot of people we've expressed interest but that's about as far as it's got," said Cooke. We've got to look at the financial viability of signing such a player and there's a whole host of other things to be done before we could act.

"We're ambitious and he's the sort of player we would obviously want, but he's been linked with American Football, Leeds Rhinos and several other clubs.

"A firm bid would result in financial pressures and there's no way we would break the bank to get him to sign."

Lomu is non-committal about his future: "There are a lot of rumours going around, but I won't be sure of what I want to do until after the World Cup.

"I have left everything to my management because I've got a job to do here and I don't want my mind to be taken away from it."
