WORK had started on the construction of the new traffic island at the junction of Alvechurch Road and Cofton Road. It would be used as a turning point for buses when new services were introduced following the scrapping of trams in July.

THE Messenger welcomed the publication of the second edition of the Countryside Code which was on sale at 4d (1.5p) per copy. In an editorial the paper said it hoped the thousands of people who flocked to the Lickey Hills every Bank Holiday would heed its advice. Following last Whitsuntide it had taken six men a week to clean up the litter. It included 1,000 discarded bottles which could have caused injuries to visitors and fires started by the magnified rays of the sun.

MEMBERS of the Bromsgrove Society for Local Studies visited Westwood Park near Droitwich to view the heronry on the shores of the lake. It was likely to be the birds' last opportunity to nest there. The large 50-foot tall oaks they had used to raise their families since at least 1872 were being felled.

EVIL influences from abroad, mainly the USA in the form of immoral films and comic strips in newspapers plus bitter political divisions at home was threatening the traditional English way of life. That was the stark warning contained in an address given by the vicar of Bromsgrove Parish Church, the Rev F G Shepherd, at the annual Civic Service on Sunday.
