FORMER England international Andy Sinton has emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant manager's job at Bromsgrove Rovers.

Sinton, who made 12 appearances for his country in the early 1990s, signed for the Victoria Ground club last Thursday after leaving Conference side Burton Albion and played 83 minutes in the 2-1 victory over Evesham United 48 hours later.

The 38-year-old, who has played for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham, has been drafted in to help player/manager Steve Pope following the resignation of George Rooney.

He is here until the end of the season and then the situation will be reviewed as chairman Tom Herbert searches for Rooney's replacement.

Sinton, out since Christmas with a knee problem, said: "I have come in to help Steve until the end of the season and see how far we can go. As far as I am concerned I am helping to the end of the season."

Sinton, who has also had spells with QPR and Sheffield Wednesday, spoke to the players at half time last Saturday and told them to keep going until the last minute. That paid off as Paul Szewczyk bagged goals in the 86th and 89th minute to give Rovers three vital points.
