May 27, 1977

Studley-born Sir Edward Perkins, who became personal detective to the Queen, has died aged 68.

Educated at Alcester Grammar School, he joined the Metropolitan Police in 1927.

He became personal body-guard to the Queen Mother in 1941.

In 1954, he became the Queen's personal detective until his retirement in 1973.

As the Queen's shadow over many years, he became Britain's best-dressed policeman for the way he always wore clothes suitable for Royal occasions.

Sir Edward was also a crack pistol shot, though it was never officially acknowledged that he carried a gun.
