WORCESTER City goalkeeper Danny McDonnell says he hasn't regretted his move to St George's Lane.

McDonnell has been a key figure in City's rise this season, helping them win the Dr Martens League Cup and be in with a chance of finishing fourth in the Premier Division.

The 26-year-old, who signed from Halesowen Town last summer, admitted: "I wouldn't have dreamed that things have gone as well as they have this season. To be fifth in the league and win the cup is great.

"If you had told me at the start of the season that we would finish in the top six, I would have bitten your hand off. To win the cup as well makes it even better."

McDonnell has been worth several points to City with a string of outstanding performances, giving justification to manager John Barton's belief that he is the best 'keeper in the league.

Though it hasn't all been a bed of roses for him at St George's Lane - he was sent off on his league debut at Tamworth and was also red-carded in the game at Folkestone - City still won both games thanks to the heroics of stand-in Ian Cottrill between the sticks.

He has also conceded several penalties, two in last week's game at new champions Margate, but overall his pluses have far outweighed the minuses.

Reflecting on the league cup success, McDonnell pointed to the penalty shoot-out success at Tamworth in the second round as a crucial moment, when he saved a crucial spot-kick to keep City in the competition.

"When you come through nights like that, you think you have a chance and we played some good football in the following rounds, especially in the semi-final and the first leg of the final. We deserved to win the trophy."

McDonnell retains a sense of guarded optimism over City's future prospects, but still hopes he can realise his ambition of playing at a higher level with City.

"It is a tricky question. We don't want to get everybody's expectations up, but I signed here for three years and by the end of those three years, we might just be pushing to get into the Conference.

"Hopefully John will be able to strengthen the squad and keep the players he wants to keep, and hopefully we can take it from there.

"It's a great platform to build on for next season."
