WORCESTER City boss John Barton says he is determined to keep faith with crocked defender Chris Greenman.

The 31-year-old club captain had an operation yesterday on a ruptured cruciate knee ligament and will not play again this season.

But although his contract expires at the end of the season, Greenman is still a part of City's future plans, according to Barton.

He said: "We would like his operation to be successful and then we can get him back. I rate him quite highly, and assuming he can get over the operation then we would like to think he can come back next season. He has determination to come back from it."

Greenman, now in his sixth season with City, was transfer-listed by former boss Graham Allner earlier this season but was taken off the list by Barton shortly after his arrival.

He suffered the injury in a Dr Martens Cup tie with Redditch United in November and has not played since.

Meanwhile, the importance of Monday's 3-1 win over bottom club Grantham Town was emphasised last night when results went against City.

They have dropped back to 18th place after victories for Cambridge City and Gloucester City, while Crawley Town also won to leave City only three points outside the relegation zone.

Barton added: "What I have been saying about how close it is and the competitiveness of the situation has been proved in 24 hours. We had to win to stay still.

"But if we keep picking up points, then somewhere along the line other clubs are going to be dropping points."

The reserves entertain Hednesford Town in a Central Conference clash tonight (7.45) with striker Sam Bowen and midfielder John Deakin set to figure.

And Worcester will be at home to Blakenall in the Dr Martens Cup third round next Monday after their 3-1 victory over Black Country rivals Bilston Town in a delayed second round tie last night.
