REMARKABLE crowd scenes clearly greeted a prospective Parliamentary candidate for the Worcester area at this time 250 years ago, according to an account in the Journal for this week of 1753.

"On Monday last, Henry Crabb Boulton Esq., made his public entry into this city in the character of a candidate to represent us in the next Parliament and arrived notwithstanding the many mean artifices and most scandalous suggestions that had been made to discourage this worthy Gentleman in the attempt at securing the Seat.

"He was met at Pershore by several hundred of the most respectful tradesmen on horseback and entered into this city amidst the acclamations of thousands to the no small mortification of our modern Jewish advocates.

"On Tuesday, he began his canvass and has since met with such success as to even exceed his warmest expectations.

Mr Boulton entertains the most grateful sentiments on the honour done to him by the City of Worcester, and by his great affability and obliging behaviour engages the hearts of the people.

Thanks

"The Governors of our Infirmary desire to return their thanks to Henry Crabb Boulton Esq., for his generous benefaction of ten guineas which was paid into the hands of the treasurers last Saturday."
