WORCESTER City boss John Barton says it will take time and money to turn his side into title contenders.

Barton's side finished a disappointing eighth in the Dr Martens League Premier Division following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Havant and Waterlooville -- their fifth loss on the trot.

He said: "What has got to be done at this football club is going to take more than two or three years.

"The first and second phases of our plan -- to avoid relegation last season and to improve this season -- have been achieved. For the third phase, to make a challenge for the championship, I don't know.

"We haven't got a bottomless pit of money. We know what resources are required to win the championship and I have to say it is a lot more than what we can provide at the moment.

"What we have got out of the resources available in the last 18 months has been the absolute maximum effort and commitment from everyone.

"But that doesn't go on for ever," said the former Everton defender.

Barton plans to announce his retained list for next season at the end of this week, and is also closing in on two potential new signings.

But he thinks some players could have missed a final chance to earn themselves new deals.

"I know we are looking at the wrong time of the season -- the players are tired and pitches are not the best -- but there were opportunities for players out there on Saturday that weren't taken.

"What we have to do in selecting staff for next year is be absolutely certain that you are going to get something for what they are getting paid."

Barton is refusing to make any predictions as to his aims for next season. He said: "There are no promises. What we will endeavour to do is improve on this season."
