MALVERN TOWN 0, GORNAL ATHLETIC 1

MALVERN Town's Jekyll and Hyde season continued on Saturday when mid-table Gornal Athletic were the visitors to Langland Stadium for a Banks's Premier League game.

Malvern opened strongly and Dene Whittal-Williams went close with a back post header from a Joe Maidment corner within the first ten minutes.

However, once again Town could not turn their good approach work in to goals.

Midway through the first half Gornal's willingness to work hard was beginning to show through and on 35 minutes went close to scoring themselves when Kevin Woodbine threaded a pin point ball in to Ian Shaw but his first time show whistled inches over the bar with the Town's defence static.

Steve Walker and Joe Maidment were working hard to try and get Malvern going but quite a few quality balls went begging with no-one getting into positions to take advantage.

The start of the second period saw Malvern finding the net when Andy Shepherd headed just inside the post but after awarding a goal referee Mr Hendley changed his mind and awarded a free kick to Gornal for alleged 'hands'.

This decision seemed to upset the home side and Gornal started to come more into the game and in the 58th minute took the lead when a ball across the box by Ian Shaw left Andy Burgess with a simple tap in from close range.

Malvern tried hard to get back into the game but were easily held by a well organised Gornal defence in which John Mills was outstanding.

Last Saturday a Rob Perrins goal secured a point for Town Reserves in their Banks's League Division One (South) fixture at Sikh Hunters and tomorrow (Saturday) are at home to Leominster Town, kick-off 3pm.
