THE discovery by Dr John Harcup of a Victorian post box in Australia similar to those in Malvern has stuck a chord with another reader.

John Baker, of Cheltenham, saw the report in the Gazette on November 26 and recalled seeing a picture of a another identical post box 'down under'.

The picture of the post box in Adelaide, South Australia, was in a book, The Letter Box, published by Jean Young Ferrugia in 1969.

"These boxes were probably cast in Australia by Bubb and Son at Victoria Foundry, in Sydney, whose boxes were also used in New Zealand," said Mr Baker.

"The three Malvern boxes were cast in Birmingham by Messrs. Smith and Hawkes.

"Incidentally, Warwick can boast two similar but earlier fluted boxes, with vertical rather than horizontal apertures."
