The consultation exercise taking place over the new Malvern hospital has been described as a waste of money by West Worcestershire MP Sir Michael Spicer.

He said: "Everyone knows the answer to the question 'Do you want a new hospital in Malvern?'

"The consultation process does not provide sufficient information upon which the public can make a judgment."

Sir Michael has also written to Mike Ridley, chief executive of South Worcester Primary Care Trust, saying he is "deeply disappointed" with the process, which is expected to continue until March.

Mr Ridley said the success of a new hospital in Malvern was very much dependent on the trust following strictly the guidelines laid down by the Department of Health.

"If, as Sir Michael Spicer suggests, my board agrees that there's insufficient information to enable the public to make a judgment, I'm sure they will ask me and my team to do further work.

"This would have the result of delaying further consideration until our formal board meeting in February 2005 and this could well find itself wrapped up in a pre-election timetable."
