A LINESMAN has spoken out in support of referee Malcolm Murray, who is retiring from junior football due to the bad behaviour of parent supporters.

Maurice Bottomley acted as linesman at a match between Malvern Town Wanderers and Hadley Rangers which Mr Murray suspended, citing behaviour of parents.

A Worcestershire FA inquiry found the charge against Hadley Rangers, of failing to control its spectators, could not be proven.

Mr Bottomley, a coach for Malvern Town Wanderers, said he was disappointed not to be asked to provide evidence. He said: "It's difficult to see how justice can be done when relevant witnesses are not asked to report their observations."

Worcestershire FA declined to comment.

George Silverman, chairman of the Mercian Festival Junior Football League this week issued a statement on the row.

It said: "The objective of the Mercian Festival Junior Football League is to encourage the development of young footballers in a structured environment.

"Included in this structure is a facility for appealing against certain charges. In this recent instance, Hadley Rangers exercised their right to a personal hearing, and subsequently

the charge was found not proven.

"Naturally we don't like loosing a referee and I would like to thank Malcolm Murray for the service he has given to our League during the past few years. Nevertheless, referees also have to conform, and accept decisions made under this same structured environment.

"I must emphasise that the Mercian Festival Junior Football League will never condone unacceptable behaviour. Clubs have been disciplined by the League in the past and we will continue this practice, if an incident is proven."
