FOUR pupils from the Downs School in Colwall have been selected to take their place in the Herefordshire U-14s boys' hockey squad.

Their selection, following recent trials and an inter-county tournament, continues the independent prep school's tradition of strongly supporting county hockey. The inter-county tournament brought together sides from as far afield as Cornwall and Dorset.

Tom Newman, one of the four selected, said: "I know that we are a long way from the city of Hereford, but I do think that everyone should do their best to support their county!"

Last year, Downs School hockey teams were Herefordshire county champions at U13 girls, U11 boys and U13 boys.

Head Alastair Ramsey said: "Our commitment and success in the Herefordshire hockey scene reflects the very hard work of both coaching staff and pupils.

"It is wonderful that so many of our children have the opportunity to be playing at this level and they will benefit greatly from the experience."
