Upton bridge should be painted once work on the new viaduct is completed, according to town councillor Eric White.
He said: "I'd like to congratulate the county council on the way the viaduct is going and ask if the bridge could be painted, as it will look tatty after the viaduct is done."
However, local county councillor Bob Bullock warned: "The viaduct has cost £2.5 million and I think it would be diplomatically unwise to press the point for the next 12 months.
"You're really being given a lot of money to put something right that was obviously wrong and you can't really gild the lily."
