A symphony of music and light was performed at Worcester Cathedral in a two-night celebration of Advent and Christmas.

The annual Son et Lumiere took place last Friday and Saturday, bringing together the talented young voices of the choir of St James's School, West Malvern, with Worcester Cathedral Choir, Worcester Festival Choral Society and the Cathedral Brass Ensemble.

Summoned by bells, courtesy of the Guild of Bellringers, the audience was treated to an evening of carols and seasonal readings against an awe-inspiring backdrop of changing coloured lights.

Particularly memorable was the choir of St James's School in a performance of Elgar's The Snow, which had many in the audience in tears. Musical direction was by Adrian Lucas, organist and choir master at the cathedral, along with Lynne Lindner, head of music at St James's.

The concert is one of the highlights of the Worcester Cathedral Arts programme and has become a firm fixture on the Christmas calendar.
