THE district's sporting stars of the future have little more than a week to apply for a financial helping hand.

The Ray Mercer Sporting Foundation, run by the Shuttle/Times and News, will be awarding up to £2,000 in grants to Wyre Forest's top young sportsmen and women in January.

Closing date for applications is Friday, December 31.

The fund, set up in memory of former Kidderminster Harriers official, Ray Mercer, has helped more than 70 individuals in the last nine years.

They have represented sports as diverse as orienteering and mountain biking and have benefited to the tune of £19,000 in amounts ranging from £50 to £400.

A foundation spokesman said: "There is a wealth of sporting talent in Wyre Forest and we are delighted to play a part in helping to nurture it."

Applicants must be under 21, excel in their chosen sport - preferably at county, regional or national level - and live within the Shuttle/Times & News circulation area.

Grants can be awarded for specialised coaching, equipment or to help pay for travelling or fees for national or international competition.

Applications should be sent to Clive Joyce, editor, Shuttle/Times & News, 6 Towers Buildings, Blackwell Street, Kidderminster DY10 2DY.

A summary of achievements, costs and ambitions and a supporting letter from a coach or club official must accompany all applications. A daytime telephone number should also be provided.

Further details can be obtained by calling 01562 633348.

Grants will be presented at the Wyre Forest Sports Personality awards on Thursday, January 27 at the Glades Leisure Centre, Kidderminster.
