IN their response to Mrs A Tongue, Mrs B Strain asked "where will it all end" and "when in Rome do as the Romans do" advised Mrs H Cornish. Well, respecting each other's ways works both ways.
So when did the British adopt this code of behaviour - to behave like the Romans when in Rome?
Britain is about the worst European nation when it comes to learning and conversing in a second language.
The school curriculum pays lip service to the teaching of second languages and British holidaymakers abroad expect to be spoken in English.
This British attitude is not likely to make the British behave like Roman when in Rome - is it?
Abroad, the majority of British ex-pats make precious little effort to integrate in their adopted countries and even here at home, the English think they are a cut above the Celtic neighbours.
