THE letters published on this page reflect the on-going discontent with the way the recycling scheme has been implemented.

In a recent issue of the Shuttle/Times and News, the previous Health Concern administration stated that their recycling consultation was the biggest ever, but conveniently forgot that the options given to Wyre Forest residents were not the most sensible.

The consultation only gave a choice between a weekly collection for recyclable waste coupled with either a weekly or a fortnightly wheelie bin collection.

Unfortunately the consultation did not include the option favoured by many correspondents to this column of a fortnightly collection for recyclable waste and a weekly wheelie bin collection.

Such a system meets the recycling objectives. It would still mean three refuse collection visits to each household per fortnight and, since this is exactly the same number of visits as the current scheme, the running costs should be broadly the same.

Also, if the Conservatives, quite rightly, opposed the downgrading of a weekly wheelie bin collection by the previous Health Concern administration, then why on earth have they changed their tune now that we have a Conservative-led administration that could reverse the decision?

It is, of course, true that our elected representatives should spend our money wisely, but they should also be prepared to recognise past mistakes and take remedial action.

If Wyre Forest residents were to be consulted again on the collection frequencies for recyclable and non-recyclable waste, most would opt for collecting the smelly stuff that goes in the wheelie bins on a weekly basis and the old newspapers and cans once a fortnight.
