THE sale of live birds at Bromsgrove's Market Hall had been well up on last year. Town autioneers Luce and Silvers reported having sold 2,200 head of turkeys on one day, the average price being 5/7 (28p) per pound.

A CENTURY of gas production in Bromsgrove ceased when the now uneconomic works in Watt Close closed. Bromsgrove would now become simply a holding station. Customers would still get gas at the turn of a switch but henceforth it would be made in Redditch.

DAMAGE put at £50,000 was caused when a serious fire broke out at the Victor Works, at Dyers' Bridge, on Worcester Road, in the early hours of Saturday. At its height, the heat became so intense that stout 22-inch steel girders became white hot and buckled. From 1896 to 1940 the premises had been used for the manufacture of footwear but was now occupied by Warne, Wright and Rowland, a Birmingham firm for making and assembling cycle parts. Thirty of the 120 staff would be temporarily out of a job.

ONE hundred members of Bromsgrove Conservative Ladies' Luncheon Club and their partners gathered at the Raven Hotel in Droitwich Spa for their annual dinner and dance. The guests were welcome by the president Mrs JR Hugh Sumner, from Rashwood.
