TWO teenage boxers came to the fore for Droitwich ABC when they featured on a tournament at Bishop's Castle.

Robin McDermott (16) and Sean Donnelly (15) continued the good recent form of the Spa club when they were both boxing opponents from the Victoria Park club in Cardiff. The two contests could barely have been closer, both being decided on a split decision, McDermott getting the nod in his bout, but Donnelly losing out in his.

McDermott's aggressive tactics clearly unsettled Eric Pountney at the start of their bout, but by the end of the first round it was difficult to separate the two. After a more cautious start to the second McDermott suddenly started to find the mark and ended the round on top. But Poutney, a Welsh Youth Champion, struck back well in the third, using his weight advantage to good effect as he tried to power his way to victory. McDermott held out, and was good value for his victory.

Donnelly, who lives in Bromsgrov, also surged to an early lead against an opponent who looked a lot bigger and older than him but in the end Keith King's greater power and strength clinched the majority vote.

This tournament will be the last before the Xmas and New Year break, and brings a very successful first half of the season to a close. Eleven boxers have represented the club, winning 18 of their 27 contests.

Pride of place must go to 13-year-old Brett Fidoe with four wins out of five, but Brendan Gibbons (18) and Robin McDermott (16), each with three wins from three starts, can also be pleased with their term's work.

Interestingly, of the nine defeats six have been by split decision, and one (on computer scoring) was by a single point.

The club will reopen on January 3. It is open every weekday evening from 6.30pm (5.30pm on Fridays) and new members are always welcome. Details from Chris Andrews (01905) 772855.
