SPA officers will be helping residents protect their Christmas presents with a greater police presence this yuletide.

Inspector Steve Brooker, head of Wychavon policing, said the number of homes and cars targeted by thieves often rises over Christmas.

"We know from past experience that televisions, DVD players, computers, mobile phones and cash are targeted.

"Additionally, the public need to be aware criminals also target cars more consistently at this time of year and there is a need to pay particular care, especially when undertaking the 'big Christmas shop'," said Insp Brooker.

He urged drivers not to leave valuables on display in vehicles and be extra cautious when loading bags into a car.

Insp Brooker said there would be a greater number of police on the beat over the festive season on the look out for thieves, shoplifters and those behaving anti-socially.

"The number of homes that are broken into can also be reduced - sometimes by simply ensuring all doors and windows are locked. People should look carefully at their homes and consider how easy it would be to gain access. If it's easy for you, then it's easy for others. If you have ever locked yourself out and managed to get back in without major difficulty, then your house in certainly not secure enough," he said.

Anyone who witnesses a crime this Christmas is urged to call police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. "Being burgled - or having items taken in other circumstances - is distressing at any time of year but in the run up to Christmas it is even more so, especially if Christmas presents are taken," added Insp Brooker.
