EMOTIONS ran high at a meeting to discuss whether Droitwich Spa Town Council should throw their weight behind plans to save the town's Lido.

At least a dozen members of the public, including representatives from the Save a Lido Today (SALT) group, attended the extraordinary council meeting on December 13.

All councillors were present at the meeting apart from Terry Spencer, Richard Morris, Eileen Hope and Jan Bolton, who sent their apologies.

It was held to discuss Councillor Graham Gopsill's (Lib Dem-Central) suggestion the town council should support, in principal, SALT's plans to re-open the Lido as a swimming pool and winter ice rink. Cllr Roy Seabourne (Lab-West) supported his motion.

However, fellow Labour Cllr Peter Pinfield (East) suggested an amendment be made to it. He said it should stipulate a parish poll is held on the matter and this amendment was agreed.

Arguments for and against the support of SALT's plans, which are currently being considered by Wychavon District Council, were then heard.

At the end of the meeting a vote was held on the amended motion. Ten councillors voted in favour and four abstained from making a decision. There were no votes against the motion.

l WYCHAVON District Council's executive cabinet will look again at SALT's proposals in the New Year.

SALT has been asked to provide further information about its proposals, including detailed analysis of a number of financial, legal, operational and technical matters.
