WORCESTER Swimming Club continue to make a splash on the Midlands scene after recording a good finish in a prestigious competition.

The club took fourth place behind regional super power City of Coventry, Perry Beaches and City of Derby in the West Midlands Speedo League Division One final, the premier team event in the Midlands.

It was the first time the club had qualified for the six-team final, evidence of the great strides the club have made in recent years.

Despite winning both qualifying rounds, the final was always going to be a much more difficult challenge, and the standard of competition proved exceptionally high.

With the top two going forward to a national final, competition was intense.

Every swimmer contributed although wins were few and far between, with Worcester recording just two first place finishes from 12-year-old Sammy Payne (100-metre backstroke) and the boys' Under 11 medley relay team of Isaac Page-Long, Enrico Maglifiore, Greg Everest and Matthew Turner.

With Chris Hallam replacing Maglifiore to add another second place in the freestyle team, the 11-year-old boys proved the club's most successful swimmers. However, there were many other fine performances, notably from the men's open swimmers.

Gordon Reeves took an impressive second in the 100m backstroke, while Andy Lowe was a close third in the 100m freestyle.

Andy Bourne's performance in the 100m breaststroke caught the eye. Despite competing against the Commonwealth champion, he kept his composure to swim a personal best for third place.

Combined

Reeves, Lowe and Bourne then combined with Chris Reeves to finish runners-up in the medley relay.

In the girls' 100m breaststroke events, Katie Askew and Gabrielle Allen each recorded second place finishes.

Allen also teamed up with Dani Hunt, Dominique Allen and Zoe Turner to claim the runners-up spot in the Under 15s medley relay.

The whole team rose to the occasion and fought for every point.

Swimmers, coaching staff and committee members alike are 100 per cent committed to building on this success.
