Great Wyrley 1 Tenbury United 1

TENBURY United produced one of their best performances of the season to hold leaders Great Wyrley to a draw on their own ground in the Express and Star West Midlands League Division 1.

Great Wyrley are unbeaten in 18 league encounters and 10th-placed Tenbury are only the fourth club to share the spoils with them this season.

The pacemakers had the better of the early play and were rewarded with a 25th minute goal, one of their central defenders netting with a back post header from a corner.

As half time approached, however, Tenbury became more adventurous and Paul Higgins almost equalised with a shot which rattled the cross bar. George Pearson and Graham Caldicott also went close.

In the second period Tenbury continued to strive for an equaliser, while Great Wyrley tactically changed to a more defensive line-up, seemingly content to hold on to their narrow lead.

But it did not achieve that aim as United equalised in the 65th minute. After a one-two move between Ashley Botwood and Pearson the latter player gave Ryan Morris possession and he fired the ball into the net.

In the closing stages the home club almost came unstuck again. In an almost identical repeat of the move from which they scored Botwood applied the finish only to see his shot kicked off the goal line.
