MEERA Syal (Who Do You Think You Are? BBC2) recently traced her roots to find "why she has a rebellious streak."
This she found was due to her grandparents who caused political mayhem and civil strife for the British in India.
Their efforts helped to win independence for the country in 1947.
I was there. In 1948, back home and bored after five years in the Army during the Second World War, I decided to spend several years wandering around Europe, ending up in Spain.
Eventually I came home, only to find that many people born in India were now settled in Britain.
They were living with the British they so despised (and abused) when I was a young soldier.
Perhaps Worcester Racial Equality council might like to comment on this apparent hypocrisy.
