STEVE Lloyd was the hero as Worcester Wanderers booked a remarkable place in the last 32 of the Powergen Junior Vase with victory at Harborne.

Wanderers' coach came on as a replacement 10 minutes from time and turned the game on its head, scoring twice and setting up one try to claw his side, down to 14 men, back from 24-9 to 24-24.

No further scores were added in extra-time, giving Wanderers the win by three tries to two.

Harborne went ahead through a Matt Rouse penalty and Rouse doubled the lead with another kick.

The hosts then mauled to the Wanderers' '22' for winger Mike Juwalski to go over in the corner for an unconverted try and an 11-0 lead.

Wanderers became frustrated and they were penalised for not releasing before Rouse slotted one penalty.

The visitors' pressure did yield two penalties but fly-half Nick Hackett shaved the posts with each. But Hackett was successful with his next attempt for a 14-3 half-time deficit.

Hackett picked up where he left off to bring Worcester back into the game at 14-6 but they conceded another penalty and Rouse replied.

Wanderers' demise seemed certain when captain Paul Hart was sent off for stamping.

The 14 men were given hope with a penalty for 17-9 but that was dashed within minutes when a fortuitous Harborne breakaway led to a try, converted by Rouse.

Enter coach Lloyd as a replacement with 10 minutes left.

He grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck to power 10 metres down the wing and score in the corner. Dan Sparrey missed the conversion.

Wanderers were fired up by their coach's example and raised their game. They attacked and attacked until Lloyd once again took the ball across the line for another unconverted try.

Only seconds were left as Watson started a move via Sparrey and replacement winger Mark Duffield spun the ball to Lloyd who dismissed hat-trick thoughts to play in Jim Callow to level the game. Sparrey's conversion slid inches past the posts.

The visitors came close to scoring on several occasions in extra-time but neither team managed to add to their tallies, seeing Wanderers through.
