A WORLD-renowned economist from Worcester was sought out by some of Asia's leading financiers to discuss nation's in the Far East adopting a single currency.

Professor David Green, principal of University College Worcester, has carried out extensive research on the development of the euro, and written books on the subject.

During a visit to the UK, a team of economists from China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines took advantage of Prof Green's knowledge and consulted him on the issues surrounding a single currency.

John Nixon, head of UCW's China office, and Christopher Harvey, from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, also took part in the discussions, at the St John's college, on Friday.

"The world's fastest growing, newly-developing economies are in Asia and it is clear that greater currency predictability and stability will help trade flourish further," said Prof Green.

"By studying experience in Europe and the UK, it will be possible for the group to judge the merits of both monetary co-operation and the operation of a fully integrated common market."

The overseas delegation also met with economists at the Bank of England, the European Central Bank and the London School of Economics.
