POP star wannabes who sung their hearts out in a talent contest held throughout the summer in Worcester are set to reunite for a special charity Christmas event.

Worcester's RSVP Idol competition, held at RSVP in The Cross, attracted more than 300 entries, all battling to be crowned champion.

The competition - modelled on ITV's hit show Pop Idol - was narrowed down to 18 finalists who performed in gruelling heats at the venue from May to August this year.

It was eventually won by 51-year-old Worcester painter and decorator Philip Waring with his performance of With A Little Help From My Friends by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and Your Song by Elton John.

Now Philip - along with eight other entrants to the competition will be taking to the stage at the venue on Monday night to reel through a whole host of festive hits.

Andy Faull, Chris Husband, Kerry McTigue, Nicki Homer, Asa Payne, Sam Pheysey, Jolie Mason and Aimee Browne will all be taking part in the event.

The band of singers will take on everything from Slade's classic Christmas tune Merry Xmas Everybody to Mariah's Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You as they get revellers in the festive mood.

There will also be a raffle and auction - with items from Worcestershire County Cricket Club and Worcester Rugby Club among those going under the hammer.

All of the proceeds raised are being donated to Macmillan Cancer Relief and event sponsors npower - which has donated prizes to the auction - has also promised to double the amount raised.

RSVP manager Stewart Bellerby said he was looking forward to the event and hoped to raise more than £2,000.

"It should be a really good, fun night and really special.

"RSVP Idol went down really, really well and we were heaving every Monday evening when it was on.

"This event is being done really as a thank-you to all the contestants for last time."

The event starts at 8pm and tickets are £3, available on the door or in advance from the venue.
