FIREFIGHTERS from Droitwich gave up their engine to a mother and hungry baby after being called to a road accident on the M5.

Retained firefighters stepped aside to allow the mother to breast feed her baby in the back of the engine after she was in collision with another car on Thursday morning.

"It's the first time we have ever had this happen to us," said leading firefighter Kevin Harris, from Droitwich station.

"But she needed to feed the baby and had nowhere else to go. We are very adaptable and turned into a mobile changing unit."

Two engines from Droitwich and one from Worcester were called to the motorway, between junctions five and six, after a car and a van collided at about 11.30am.

"Because of the wet weather and people rubber-necking, we ended up with another minor collision, within 300 metres," Mr Harris said.

Four cars were involved in the incident and an ambulance, which was on its way to Walsgrave Hospital with two patients, stopped en route to assess the scene.

A further two ambulances were sent to the scene, as was the air ambulance, although this was not required.

One person was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with neck pain and another with chest pains.

"While we were clearing the scene, this lady was able to feed her baby," Mr Harris added.

"It was something a bit unusual for us, and the lads had to wait about 20 minutes until she had finished, but they didn't mind.

"We haven't had anyone giving birth in an engine yet, so maybe that will be next."

It is not known who the woman was or where she was from.
