NEWTOWN gained their second cup victory of the season and although both against lowly sides get a well deserved semi-final place.

NEWTOWN SPORTS 6, LYPPARD RANGERS U16s 0

The pitch conditions were far from ideal but there were no complaints as Newtown again dominated procedures as in their other cup victory. Newtown attacked from the outset and two goals from Mickey Pearson and a quality goal from Lee Jenkins, after good build up by David Reynolds and Henry Curry, gave them a three-goal advantage at the break. Lyppard tried hard to get back into the game but Chris Packer, Craig Richards, Joe Ball and Matt Gregory were at their best in defence dealing with all of the Lyppard breaks. Henry Curry won the aerial battle but cursed his luck after a few chances on goal went either wide or were saved by the Lyppard keeper.

The second period saw Newtown again pressing forward and giving all their subs a run out made no difference to them being the dominate side. Three goals again in the second half, one by Lewis Vine and two by David Reynolds, sealed the victory. They should really have scored more but for squandering chances. Mickey Pearson and David Reynolds again combined well throughout and were a constant threat to the Lyppard keeper.

Man of the match was Chris Packer.

WELLAND JUNIORS U14S 2, NEWTOWN SPORTS COLTS 5 (aet)

A BIG crowd were treated to a really exciting cup match as the never-say-die Colts team fought back from 2-0 down to gain a hard-earned win.

Welland were really fired-up for this game and took a shock two-goal lead in the first half, James Allen and Tom Pugh scoring. Welland had their tails up and it took all of the Colts resolve to respond, but shortly before half-time their persistence was repaid when Buckle fed Hale to slot home.

With Allen outstanding in midfield, and defenders Pugh, Stuart Davison, Luke Fain and Joe Forsyth in excellent form, Welland continue to dominate the game at the start of the second half.

Edwards came on for the Colts at half-time as they took the game to Welland. It was White who made a dramatic entry to the game when he finished with a delightful lob, following some better play by the Colts.

To their great credit the Welland boys raised their game again in the first period of extra time, Allen and Callum White both coming close. The game however was finally decided in the second period of extra time as the Colts killed off the game with three impressive goals from Hale, Caffull and Allison, their patience rewarded against a resolute Welland team.

Welland man of the match was James Allen.

NEWTOWN SPORTS JUNIORS U14S 0, LITTLETON JUNIORS 2

NEWTOWN entertained Littleton Juniors in the quarter-final of the Wayne Phillpotts Memorial Trophy.

From the start, Newtown were pushed deep into their own half. Littleton were playing with confidence and stroking the ball around well. Newtown's defenders Phillips, Clack, Doyle and Puffett were again outstanding and worked tirelessly to keep Littleton at bay. This frustrated Littleton and largely restricted them to long-range shots, which Newtown's Keeper, Chris Spicer, dealt with comfortably. When Newtown did break forward, it was mostly as a result of using the long ball game, but Littleton used the offside trap to good effect and caught the Newtown Strikers offside time and again. With half-time approaching, and largely against the run of play, Newtown created a flurry of chances which saw Butler, Knott, Gittins and McCann all going close.

The second half saw Newtown start to put a few passes together, this unsettled Littleton and allowed the Juniors to come much more into the game. James McCann brought a bit more bite to the mid-field, and as a result Newtown started to push forward more. Unfortunately, Littleton's offside trap continued to extinguish any threat from the Newtown Strikers. As frustration started to creep into Newtown's play, Littleton took the opportunity to grasp the initiative and scored in quick succession from two set pieces.

Although Newtown created more chances, it was not to be their day and they had to accept that they had been beaten by the better team.

Newtown's man of the match was Niall Phillips

MALVERN TOWN WANDERERS U13S 3,

SUFFOLK RANGERS U13S 1

THIS was a good home Mercian Festival League win for Malvern against a strong Suffolk side.

A tightly-played first half saw the visitors open the scoring with the first goal but Malvern quickly produced more attacking play with some neat midfield passing from Allmark and Whittle. Persistent work from Howie led to a penalty which was neatly converted by Asquith.

In the second half a goalmouth scramble saw an unlucky own goal by Suffolk but this was followed by a well-placed Howie goal from a tight angle, taken after a midfield surge from Asquith. Ball was solid in defence, working well with Banks, Webb and Titmuss, to produce a hard-to-beat line-up. In the end this was a decisive win for a confident Malvern team even though play was at times uneven so that Wheeler's impressive goal-keeping skills were an essential part of the team performance.
