RESIDENTS on a Droitwich estate are campaigning for safety measures on a "death trap" road.

People living on the Westlands have called for a crossing on the main island outside the estate, which leads to the industrial park and to the main town centre.

A petition started days ago has already generated more than 300 signatures as angry pedestrians demand action.

One of those at the forefront of the drive is Keith Hobson, a member of the Westlands Community Association.

"We want to slow down traffic on the A38 outside the estate," he said.

"It is bad enough trying to get out of the Westlands in a car, but for pedestrians, it is an absolute death trap.

"The logical thing would be to take away the traffic and divert it to a quieter place. But as that is not going to happen, we would like to see traffic lights put in.

"Sometimes it can take young mums or people in wheelchairs 25 minutes before they can cross the road, and then they are taking risks.

"There is a crossing point, but it takes people out of their way. We want something which is convenient and safe to everyone.

"We have put petitions in local shops and schools and are going to go door-to-door.

"By the end of it, we hope to have more than 1,000 signatures."

County Councillor Pam Davey said she had tried, unsuccessfully, a few years ago, for a crossing but added she was determined to back residents.

"I have had a word with the Highways Partnership but they have said there is very little that can be done to make the area safer," she said.

"However, there does seem to be a call for crossing at the site in question and if enough people want it, and it is thought to be safe, then I can't see why the idea wouldn't be considered."
