BEWDLEY Rowing Club members won 28 medals at Evesham Head of the River race - a fitting tribute for the late Ken Sollom, a club stalwart who died recently.

The junior 18 coxed four of Rich Jackson, Alex Holden-Smith, Simon Barbour and Stewart Cherrington, coxed by Sian Thompson, won in a time of 16 minutes 10 seconds, three seconds off the course record for their class.

Beating their opposition by nearly three minutes, the novice men's pair of Laurence Hopkins, Alexander Holden-Smith won their class in 18-02.

Joint 12th fastest,with Evesham, were the men's senior four coxless quad of Laurence Hopkins, Rob Parker, Matt Thomas and Andy Philips, rowing as a crew for the first time. The men's senior three four coxed beat their opposition by more than 30 seconds. Matt Collier, Ben Warnett, Ben Bevan and Jason Carpenter, coxed by Kerry Carpenter, at 16-47 minutes were the ninth fastest crew of the day.

Bob Potter crossed the line in 22-44 in the Veteran G sculls, for competitors over the age of 65, and also competed in the winning Veteran F coxed four in a Bewdley/Nottingham Britannia composite crew of Colin Loveday, Bob Potter, John Fazarkerley and Bob Griffiths (Nottingham).

The men's novice coxed four of Sean Raybould, Barry Turner, Sam Barker, Simon Thornycroft, coxed by Zena Clark, who had only rowed together once before, beat seven crews to come second in their class, recording the 23rd fastest time of the day at 17-42 minutes.

The novice women's coxed four, Natalie Hipkiss, Kerry Carpenter, Jenny Merchant and Kate Evans, with cox Zena Clark, beat two other novice women's crews to come home nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second crew, beating the times set by three women's senior three coxed fours.

Jo Atkinson and Teresa Roberts of Bewdley, with Tina Bonham representing Evesham, and Mandy Inkster from Totnes, made the winning women's senior two composite quad.

The mens' senior 3 quad recorded 15-52, the third fastest crew overall for the day, second in their event in 26-35 minutes. Sian Thompson won the women's junior 14 sculls, and Bewdley juniors performed well at Wycliffe near Gloucester.

The boys J14 coxed quad of Zac Price, Ben Prince, Tom Everard and Tim Page, coxed by Anna Chapman, coached by Steve Hine, secured silver. There was a silver for the girls J14 A coxed quad of Kate Crowther-Green, Bryony Lloyd, Zoe Buckland, Keren Beddoes, coxed by Mairi Lawther.

The B quad of Bethany Turner, Katy Venables, Gemma Boland and Bethan England, coxed by Lawther, clinched bronze. The girls J14 double of Adele Robbins and Sophie McGrath finished sixth.

Anna and Jo Raven were unlucky to finish fourth of 10 crews, but the girls' coach Jo Atkinson and her doubles partner Teresa Roberts sampled success in the women's S2 double sculls and later combined with Bonham, and Inskster, to make it a golden double with in S2 coxless quads.
