WYRE Forest students were given an insight into the world of work when they tried their hands at a range of jobs and learned more about apprenticeships.

The third annual apprenticeship taster day, held at Kidderminster Harriers' Aggborough football ground, was intended to promote apprenticeships as an option for students leaving sixth form.

Ninety students from Wyre Forest high schools and Kidderminster College were invited to the event, held last Wednesday.

It was organised by the North East Worcestershire Partnership, high schools and Kidderminster College, with the support of the Learning and Skills Council Herefordshire and Worcestershire and the Connexions advice and information service for young people.

Local training providers were on hand to give the pupils information, advice and the chance to experience different professions.

Each student was able to try two of the trades on offer, including catering, engineering, hairdressing, animal care, childcare, construction, landscaping, motor vehicle maintenance and business administration.

They also took part in practical activities designed to give them a taste of working life and attended a workshop, organised by Connexions, to explain the apprenticeship application process.

Brenda Lines, work-related learning manager from King Charles I High School, said the day was a success.

"The students had a brilliant day," she explained, "They had lots of opportunities to find out about apprenticeships, to experience different types of work and to ask questions."

The apprenticeship taster day aims to expand the currently limited uptake of vocational opportunities by young people in the Wyre Forest district.
