PLANS to reopen the Droitwich lido have received a big boost with the backing of the town council.

Local Labour, Liberal Democrat and Independent councillors voted unanimously in favour of the proposals put forward by the campaign group Save A Lido Today (SALT).

This sent a strong message of support to Wychavon District Council, which will make the final decision in the New Year.

"We are behind the clear public wish to get the lido back into operation," said Town and Worcestershire County Councillor, and leader of the Labour group, Peter Pinfield.

"We support the retention of the lido and in principle, the proposals put forward by SALT and ask Wychavon District Council to give every assistance to SALT to bring these to fruition.

"We would also ask that before a final decision is made, the district council consults the people of Droitwich in a parish poll.

"I strongly believe in the plans for the lido and SALT should be given every opportunity to progress their ideas."

However, the future for the lido may not be that secure. All Conservative town councillors, apart from the Mayor, Councillor Ann Taft, abstained from voting on the issue.

"It is clear from the Conservatives that we do have a battle on our hands and I do fear that Torys from Pershore, Evesham and the rural areas will scupper the scheme," added Coun Pinfield.

"That will be a disgrace and a slap in the face for the town. I sincerely hope they listen to the public." and give us back our Lido."
