WORKERS at Worcestershire County Council have been awarded for their energy efficiency work.

The council took this particular category at this year's National Green Apple Environment Awards, which are recognised as one of the country's top honours.

Ensuring that energy was used effectively in council buildings, and the council's special education awareness programme, were deciding factors in the win.

Winners were presented with their trophies at the House of Commons, where they were guests of trade secretary Patricia Hewitt, and also met TV actress Janie Dee, who is currently starring in a series based on novels by PD James.

Organisers for the awards invited entries from any council, company, community or country that is making an effort to protect or enhance the environment.

Worcestershire County Council fought off competition from thousands of entries to take its prize.
