THE headteacher of Alcester Grammar School has hit back at allegations that the school is lacking in community spirit.

Iain Blaikie was angered by remarks reported in last week's Chronicle after the school announced it was to set up a series of free drama workshops as part of its Performing Arts Status.

Leaders of the town's existing youth drama group, Alcester Junior Drama Club and Youth Theatre, were not approached and director Linda Chadwick said that the school was not "community minded".

But Mr Blaikie refutes the claim, pointing out the proposed workshops have been set up following a meeting with Stratford District Council's arts officer to meet a specific need in the town. They will be aimed at youngsters who cannot travel to or pay for drama training.

He also said performing arts status was applied for and granted with the backing of local groups and students actively took part in community events, including local history projects and performances, pancake races and a day of local enterprise. Pupils also helped out in other schools' assemblies.

"We enjoy and will continue our involvement with the community at every level," he said.

"Since joining Alcester Grammar nearly three years ago I have constantly strived to work more closely with the community and have been active in attracting about £4 million investment to provide better facilities for the school and the community.

"The £2 million state-of-the-art sports hall will be available in the evening and at weekends for public use and we hope to offer free performing arts activities for people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Business users have also expressed interest.

"My understanding was, and remains, that the people of Alcester want better provision and we are trying our best to offer what we can.

"I am bemused by comments that suggest we are not part of the community. Hundreds of our students live in Alcester and many progress to us from the other local high schools with whom we enjoy close and fruitful relations.

"I entirely agree that everybody should combine to produce the best possible (and affordable) facilities and still puzzle at the Greig's plans to develop sport in view of our known and agreed provision.

"We are not playing any cards close to our chest or making plans on the basis of possible/provisional funding. We are delivering!"
