THE group fiercely campaigning to re-open Droitwich Spa's Lido has hit back at claims they will want £100,000 a year of subsidies to run it.

Save a Lido Today (SALT) has said £100,000 is the very maximum they will need and that's only if no one uses the facility- but they are more likely to need about £30,000.

The annual subsidies are on top of the £1 million required to revamp the Worcester Road Lido as a swimming pool and winter ice rink.

The figures were reported in the agenda for the meeting of Wychavon District Council's executive cabinet on December 9, and in last week's Advertiser.

Members of SALT attended the meeting held at the Civic Centre in Pershore.

John Cox, a SALT spokesman, said: "SALT would like to make it clear that it's proposals to Wychavon District Council included operating estimates for the first year of operation based on various assumptions of attendance numbers.

"The quoted estimated deficit of £100,000 is based on the worst case, which is low attendance. The estimated deficit of £30,000 is based on a medium case estimated attendance.

"The agenda for the executive board meeting did not show that the best case estimate would actually produce an operating surplus."

It was decided SALT would provide additional information in support of its proposals. They are currently working with a business planning team and will report back to the executive board in the New Year.

"We are looking forward to continuing negotiations with Wychavon District Council in the near future," added John.

Droitwich Spa town councillors were set to throw their weight behind SALT's proposals at their meeting on Monday.
