AN under-used village hall, in need of £45,000 worth of refurbishment, is set to be given a lifeline by residents hoping to recreate a traditional Christmas scene.

The Friends of the Village Hall, a voluntary group of residents, has been formed to revive interest in Catshill's community centre, which is in Golden Cross Lane.

The hall has been at the centre of the community since 1893 holding night school classes in the 1920s and music competitions in the 30s. It was a classroom and kitchen for schoolgirls, and a tool-making factory during the 1940s and also a cinema until the 1960s.

A traditional Christmas party, originally held at the hall during the late 1930s, will now be revived to help generate funds for the venue.

Catherine Simcox, of the Friends, said: "We want to recreate this traditional event and make it an annual celebration. We want the village hall to offer all residents a lovely festive environment over the Christmas period."

Children have been invited to decorate the hall in preparation for the Christmas party, which will be held this Saturday.

The event will run from 4-7.30pm, culminating in a carol service around the tree.

Tickets cost £4 per child and can be purchased from Michelle Bingham on 01527 837392.
