AN amateur boxing fight night aims to raise money for charity.

The Rotary Club of Droitwich Spa is planning a night of bouts and entertainment in May, but needs the initial support of businesses in Worcestershire to make the night a profitable success.

Mike Crossley, the community and vocational service committee chairman for the Rotary Club said he needed some commitment from businesses before the venue, Worcester Racecourse, was secured.

"It will be a great night where businesses can entertain their clients, or a group from work can come and watch the boxing - anyone with an interest in boxing and the entertainment will have a great night.

"All the profits will be distributed to the Rotary Club's charities and St Richard's Hospice," he said.

He added that many of the contenders at the fight night would come from the amateur boxing club in Droitwich.

"Finding a suitable venue has been the hard part, but now we want to hold the event on Friday, May 6. There will probably be about six bouts following an excellent three-course meal," continued Mr Crossley.

"What we really need is about 10 or 12 businesses to pledge their support so we can go ahead and make the booking."

Tables for between eight and 12 people can be bought - the price is £35 per person.

Chris Andrews, also a member of the Rotary Club, is a coach at the boxing club, which has more than 15 boxers signed up with the Amateur Boxing Association to enter the ring.

"We held an event like this last year at Worcester Rugby Club. It was smaller than the one we are planning next time, and it still managed to raise £2,000," he said.
