INSPECTORS could give Worcestershire County Council a boost by improving their rating of the authority's work.

The council was officially listed as "good" during a check by the Audit Commission in the summer, but was re-evaluated last month.

Council chief executive Rob Sykes said he was not aware of the outcome of the visit, but he was confident the authority was close to moving to the top grade.

"It was a little bit of a surprise to have a number of inspectors descend so we must be close, I would say," he told a council cabinet meeting last week .

"If we don't make it the fact they were here demonstrates we must be very close indeed."

The council will be told of the outcome on Thursday.
