WORCESTER City skipper Carl Heeley has warned supporters not to get carried away by expectation next season.

City will be expected to challenge for the Dr Martens League Premier Division title following their league cup success.

But Heeley, who lifted the trophy for City as well as winning both player of the year awards, warned: "There has been a vast improvement this season, but the next step is going to be more difficult.

"Our aim is to challenge next season for the league, but I seem to remember a couple of years ago when Graham Allner was here that expectation was massive, and look what happened then. We are not taking anything for granted."

Greater consistency is the key for City according to Heeley, who admitted he was bitterly disappointed with their final position of eighth when they looked odds on to finish third at one stage.

The cup final victory over Crawley Town was insufficient compensation.

The 31-year-old added: "Ever since the first leg of the cup final we were very disappointing.

"We should have finished third, no two ways about it - we have had enough chances. But if you had offered us that at the start of the season, we would have accepted it.

"When you look at the Fisher game late on and one or two others, it goes to show that you don't just have to turn up in this league, otherwise anyone can turn you over."

Heeley says he was pleased with his form this season in both midfield and defence - he was the only City player this season not to miss a game.

"Personally, I think I have had a pretty good season, but the team has been successful and I have fitted in as part of that. I just have to do my job and hope everybody else does.

"I think I came back fit in the summer and I have had a bit of luck as well. I haven't picked up any silly little injuries and got a little bit of momentum."

His fine displays helped him win the votes of both the fans and his fellow players, and became only the second player to win the supporters' award three times, following in the footsteps of Howard Madley in the 1960s.

Heeley added: "That is very rewarding, but it is nice to get the recognition of your fellow players as well."

Heeley is looking forward to recharging his batteries before pre-season training starts again in July.

"We want to have a break and a good rest, and then get back into it and get working hard."
