DEFENSIVE rock Chris Brindley enjoyed FA Trophy success at the weekend in an emotional rollercoaster of a game.

Centre-half Brindley, a key member of Harriers' Conference success in 1994 during a spell of more than four years at the club, dispatched an 87th-minute volleyed winner for Hednesford on Sunday.

The 34-year-old had earlier put opponents Canvey Island ahead with an own goal but eventually struck at the right end to seal a 3-2 scoreline at Villa Park.

Brindley, a pub landlord, lost in a Trophy final at Wembley and broke his arm in the process as Harriers were defeated 2-1 by Woking in 1995.

But he did triumph in the competition with Telford six years earlier, 1-0 over Macclesfield, before going on to become a vital figure at Aggborough with a knack for scoring from corners.

He left for Hednesford in 1998 and is now assistant boss but they have endured a disappointing campaign in the Dr Martens Premier Division.

Another Harriers old boy, left-back Les Hines who was at the club from 1998 to 2000, levelled Sunday's match to 2-2 with a free-kick.

Also playing were Hednesford striker Mark Danks, who had a trial with Kidderminster last summer, and Canvey's Neil Midgley, a former loan signing of Jan Molby's.

Anyone wanting to bring back memories of Harriers' escapades in the Trophy, including the 1987 final replay win over Burton Albion, may be interested in a new book.

The FA Trophy has been written by Scarborough fan Paul Eade and published by Stroud-based Tempus. It also includes the 1991 Wembley defeat to Wycombe.
