CHAMPAGNE corks popped as New Road yesterday as Worcestershire Royals clinched promotion to the First Division of the Norwich Union League.

A 96-run victory over Essex Eagles under the Duckworth-Lewis system ensured that skipper Graeme Hick's triumphant troops have made a quick-fire return to the top flight after last season's relegation.

"We set out to achieve promotion and we have done it," said the County's delighted Director of Cricket Tom Moody.

"We have come a long way this year. We have made it hard for ourselves by having to leave it to the last game but really, on a positive note, we have played some good cricket this season, particularly in one-day competitions.

"I think this result reflects that even though we had a couple of weeks where we had to a couple of disappointing setbacks.

"This was a big game for us. Effectively it was a final, but I stressed to the players that the most important thing was to get out there and enjoy it. They certainly did that -- and they did it in style."

After Worcestershire had won the toss and decided to bat, the start was delayed because of rain which caused five interruptions during their innings.

The game was eventually reduced to a 30 overs-a-side affair with the County making 166-6. Philip Weston top scored with 68, including eight fours off 86 balls, while Hick cracked 46.

Essex's revised target was 194 and they were all out for 97 with the County having 5.4 overs to spare.

Their most productive bowler was spinner Matthew Rawnsley, while paceman Andy Bichel grabbed 2-3.

"With the interruptions it was important we maintained our concentration and focus. We did that and we ended up with a very good total and the boys executed the bowling side of the game superbly," said Moody.

He was particularly pleased for the younger players to be able to savour the promotion which has been achieved by finishing in the third place.

"It's important they taste it because there is going to be plenty more of it to come," said Moody, who believes the County's return to Division One will help attract new players.

"We will always look to strengthen the squad because I don't want to just be in Division One I want to win it."
