MALVERN Rugby Club is staging a special musical event on Sunday featuring one of South Africa's leading jazz singers, Esther Miller.
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, her love of music was started by a mixture of Nat King Cole and Perry Como records and singing in church and school choirs.
But it was while studying medicine in Cape Town that she first encountered live jazz and underwent a dramatic career change.
She credits the work of Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, Nat Cole and Frank Sinatra as having had an impact on her style.
Appearances have included sell-out performances at the 2001 and 2002 Birmingham International Jazz festivals.
At the rugby club, she will be backed by her quintet, which includes Bryan Corbett on trumpet, Gerry Spencer on piano, Zoltan Dekaney on bass and Neil Bullock on drums.
The session starts at 8pm and admission is £5.
