GRAHAM Turner has warned his players of the pitfalls ahead of them as Hereford United head to Nationwide North club Southport in the FA Cup first round.

The Bulls have enjoyed their own giant-killing cup feats in recent weeks after dumping both Coca-Cola League Two leaders Scunthorpe United and League One side Doncaster Rovers out of the LDV Vans Trophy.

But manager Turner firmly insists the boot is now on the other foot as Hereford enter the Haig Avenue clash as hot favourites to book their place in the next stage of the famous competition.

He knows the Lancashire seaside club, who were relegated from the Nationwide Conference in the 2002/03 season, will be desperate to cause a shock themselves.

Turner said: "We are very capable of beating Southport but we are fully aware of the pitfalls that could materialise tomorrow. It's one of those games that we have just got to get through.

"If you look at the game, it's a reverse of what we've been through in the LDV Vans Trophy. We have been the underdog twice against teams in higher divisions and have won both games. But now we must realise that Southport are in the situation that we were in.

"The message to the players is that we have got to match Southport. I've always thought that they are a well organised club and it was a shame to see them relegated from the Conference. But I'm sure they will be back."

Striker Lee Mills has recovered from a stomach bug but has lost half a stone in weight in the process, while Adam Stansfield faces a late fitness test after picking up a thigh strain.

A poser for Turner is whether to recall Andy Tretton into the heart of defence or stick with Tamika Mkandawire, who impressed with his performance during last weekend's 1-1 draw with Barnet.

The Sandgrounders are third in Nationwide North and tomorrow will prove manager Liam Watson's biggest game since taking over 13 months ago.

Port chairman Charlie Clapham believes there could be a surprise in store. He said: "Liam has an excellent FA Cup record and we hope he remains a lucky manager in the FA Cup for us."

Former Southport and Bulls legend Eric Redrobe is the guest of honour.
