A CALLOW End woman who organised harness race meetings to raise thousands for the new Acorns Children's Hospice in Worcester has left a lasting legacy.

Kath Shellam, who died aged 56 in September, helped set up the Three Counties Harness Race Meeting, which has taken place in Hanley Swan every August since 2000.

The meeting that Kath ran with her husband Dave and Gloucestershire couple Ivor and Pauline Stokle raised a total of £7,500 to help equip and furnish two bedrooms in the new hospice.

On Tuesday (November 9), Dave Shellam and Mr and Mrs Stokle presented a cheque to Angela Mercer, head nurse at the new hospice.

"When we first started out with the idea of raising money for Acorns it was Kath's dream to raise enough money to equip one room at the new hospice," said Mr Shellam. "We're over the moon we've raised enough money to help equip not just one but two bedrooms."

A collection at Mrs Shellam's funeral at St Peter's Parish Church, Powick, raised more than £500, which will also go to the hospice.

This year's race meeting was to have been the last but the organisers have now decided to hold a special race in memory of Mrs Shellam on Sunday, August 7, 2005 to raise even more money for Acorns.
