A COLWALL woman who taught fitness classes in Malvern until she was 91 has died.

Kathleen Tookey, who died on October 14 aged 93, taught at Malvern Hills College for more than 40 years.

Mrs Tookey, nee Hughes, was born in London in 1911 and came to Malvern in 1948 to start married life with Ronald Tookey, who ran the Three Counties Spraying Company.

The couple, who met when Mrs Tookey was teaching ballroom dancing in Hereford, originally lived in Old Storridge but moved to Colwall in 1958, where she lived up until her death.

They had a small fruit farm and Mrs Tookey picked fruit and made posies to sell to Mr Pickin's grocery shop in Malvern.

Having originally taught children's dance classes in Alfrick, Mrs Tookey progressed to teach keep fit at Malvern Hills College, attracting a band of loyal pupils.

Her achievements were officially recognised in 1999 when she was invited to a garden party held at Buckingham Palace.

Mrs Tookey was noted for her devotion to fashion and neighbours often remarked on how elegant she was, saying she looked as though she was on her way to London's Bond Street.

A great music lover, she attended many concerts at the Winter Gardens in Malvern.

She also enjoyed some success as a writer, with pieces published under the pen-name of Kaye Hughes.

Her daughter, Fleur, said: "She was full of vitality and always ready with very good advice."

Mrs Tookey finally stopped teaching fitness classes aged 91, but continued to live by her motto "Movement is Life!" and regularly walked on the Malvern Hills. She leaves Fleur and two grandsons, James and Peter.

Mrs Tookey's funeral takes place at 2.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) in the Priory. Everyone is welcome to attend. Donations can be made to the Defeating Deafness charity on 08088 082222.
