RESIDENTS living near a proposed housing development in St Andrew's Road, Malvern, are worried about the number of dwellings and the traffic it will generate.

QinetiQ has applied for planning permission to build 38 flats and houses on the site between its main entrance and Fraser Close.

The site has been earmarked for development in Malvern Hills District Council's draft local plan.

Residents say the problem is not so much that the site could be redeveloped for housing, but that QinetiQ has exceeded MHDC's recommended limit of 24 houses.

They worry that the lack of on-site parking could lead to overspill onto other roads and that existing homes will be overlooked.

Jon Pickering, spokesman for the residents, said: "If existing buildings on the site could not be converted, at least with fewer new homes they can be lowered in height, provide a more pleasant environment in which to live, and traffic and parking issues would be proportionally reduced."

Objectors hope they can have the application amended.
