SMOKE-free pubs in Worcestershire say that cigarette bans have done wonders for trade.

As Scotland announced a similar ban in all workplaces and enclosed public areas, yesterday, the landlords of Droitwich's The Spinners Wine Bar and the Yorkshire Grey, at Earls Croome, say their customers' reaction has been extremely positive.

"People absolutely love the idea," said Steve Potts, of the Yorkshire Grey.

"The reason I went non-smoking was because, last Christmas, most people didn't want smoky areas.

"I allocated one table for smoking and found it wasn't being used. As a result I banned it completely.

"I think people like the idea of drinking, and especially eating, in a clean atmosphere.

"For those who have medical conditions, such as asthma, it's a relief to be able to go out without the threat of an attack. Business is booming as a result."

Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell yesterday announced the Scottish Executive will bring forward a new law to end smoking in all Scottish workplaces and enclosed public places.

It follows a major public consultation that produced a record response and backed the new law overwhelmingly.

The move will increase the pressure on Health Secretary John Reid to announce a similar move for the whole of the country in the White Paper on public health due next week.

But Peter Jinks, who opened The Spinners Wine Bar in June, does not believe a complete ban will happen yet.

"The laws will change in a few years, but not straight away," he said, "although I think there is a call for no smoking in enclosed public spaces.

"Everyone who comes here loves the idea of being in a smoke-free environment, even the smokers.

"In fact, smokers have told me they come here because they know they'll smoke less.

"We're doing very well as a result."
